From Firefighting to Forever: A Love Story Across Borders

How did you and your partner meet?

We are both firefighters who are very active in the fire training world but he is in the USA, and I in Canada. He came to southern Alberta, Canada to teach at a conference near where I work and live, and a member of their team had to cancel last minute due to a family emergency; they were desperately looking for a local replacement familiar with the material - and that was me! We connected through a shared passion for what we do and began spending hours upon hours on the phone each day. It was clear each time we spoke that our connection was more than just a shared love of the job. A few weeks later, he was teaching at a fire department in Montana, about 5 hours from where I lived. He called me up and asked what I was doing for dinner; he then rented a car and drove 5 hours one way to take me on our first date. And so it began.

Describe the moment you knew they were The One.

I should have known after he made such a grand gesture for our first date that he was the one, as our connection was instantaneous, but I was skeptical due to the long distance and past relationships that had done me wrong. After a few more dates which took MUCH effort on his part (rearranging travel plans and making long trips), we met up on mutual ground as I was heading on another holiday.. we spent two beautiful days together in an amazing place and when it was time to say goodbye, my heart sank. Not knowing at that point when we would be able to see each-other again felt like the worst thing in the world - that is when I knew he was “The One”. That’s when we both knew. However, little did we know at the time that we would meet again a few days later as he spontaneously came to join my cousin and I for a day of our vacation. A year later, after many air miles and crazy adventures together, he asked me to marry him, and I couldn’t be more excited to spend the rest of my life with the most kind hearted and loving man I’ve ever been so privileged to know.

Can you share the details of the proposal?

He incorporated many of my favorite things & our favorite things to do together into one special moment! While we were camping at Mistletoe state park for the winter solstice, we were watching a beautiful sunset and he took a knee and my breath away.

How did you celebrate after the engagement?

Watched the sky turn red then dark, cooked chilli over the camp stove and enjoyed with a bottle of wine, then stargazed by the campfire. A perfect winter night. Until the wind came up and the temps dropped 10 degrees.. then we spent the rest of the night snuggled warm in several layers in our rooftop tent! Haha

Do you have any advice or tips for others planning a proposal?

Make it special - not extravagant, but special. Sean chose the perfect moment to propose because it was try “us” in our natural form - no fancy dinner or expensive props, just the beauty of nature and doing something we truly enjoyed to do with each other. It was authentically us in so many ways and that made it perfect to me!

Could you share your experience with selecting and purchasing your engagement ring from Point No Point Studio?

Forgot to answer this one on the first submission as my phone was being whacky! The ring he chose was PERFECT! I have always loved black diamonds and said that IF I ever married, I did not want a traditional diamond. We stopped in this summer to look and I liked a few different features from multiple rings. The ring Sean ordered brought them all together amazingly. It is unique, special, and one of a kind, just like our love.
